Imre, Kostyák - Cello

Basel (languages: Hungarian, German, French, Romanian)

Born in Cluj, he started his musical studies in his hometown and attained his degree  with honours at Gheorghe Dima Music Academy, Cluj in the musical class of professor Valentin Arcu. Between 1976 and 1981 he was the leader of cello voice of Sibiu Philharmonic Orchestra and The Transylvania State Philharmonic Orchestra of Cluj-Napoca. As a soloist and as a chamber musician he made unforgettable concert appearances. In 1981 mentored by Heinrich Schiff, he further improved his knowledge at the Music Academy of Basel. Later on Imre participated in world famous string quartet masterclasses: Végh - (Basel), Alban Berg (Vienna), LaSalle (Cincinatti, USA), Galimir Juilliard (New York), Kolisch (Tanglewood), and in 1983 he became the principal cello player in Erato Quartett. He made memorable concert appearances with the orchestra around the world, they won numerous international music awards like the Swiss Grand Award for Culture; they successfully participated and had been awarded at the Evian Competition (today: The Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition), the EBU International Contemporary Folk Music Festival Lugano and the “G.B. Viotti” International Music Competition. They won the first prize at Colmar International Festival for the best Beethoven performance. Besides the international concert appearances, they participated in numerous radio and television recordings. Amongst their CD editions, the most popular ones are A. Honegger: The 3 String Quartets  and H. Scherchen, O. Messiaen quartett. Besides teaching violoncello, he taught cello teaching methodology at the Music Academy of Basel.
